Disimpaction is a dental surgical procedure used to remove a tooth that is impacted, meaning it has not erupted normally into the mouth because it is blocked by bone, gum tissue, or another tooth. The procedure is most commonly associated with impacted wisdom teeth (third molars), although other teeth can also become impacted.

An impacted tooth may cause pain, swelling, gum infection, bad breath, difficulty opening the mouth, or damage to nearby teeth. In some cases, it may not cause any symptoms but can still create problems over time.

During disimpaction, the dentist or oral surgeon first examines the tooth using dental X-rays or other imaging. Local anesthesia is generally used to numb the area. A small incision may be made in the gum, and if necessary, a small amount of surrounding bone is carefully removed. The impacted tooth may be divided into smaller sections to make removal easier and safer. After the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned and the gum may be closed with stitches.
